TSUM

The TSUM initiative in Kawada, Sabae City aims to preserve and evolve the traditional techniques of Echizen lacquerware. Echizen lacquerware has been an integral part of our lives, particularly in the production of soup bowls. However, in recent years, the industry has experienced a decline in production value and the number of employees. Under the TSUM initiative, efforts are being made to incorporate environmentally friendly paints and introduce new designs that resonate with modern lifestyles, while still maintaining the essence of Fukui's lacquerware tradition. The TSUM lacquerware comes in three different shapes, two heights, and three color variations, allowing for various combinations and customization. The lower, flat shape can be used as a plate or tray, while the taller shape can serve as a tube or box. Additionally, stacking items of the same shape enables the creation of jubako (tiered boxes) or boxes with lids. This versatility allows the TSUM lacquerware to adapt to different situations and seamlessly integrate into your daily life. Through the TSUM initiative, the goal is to not only preserve the craftsmanship and techniques of Echizen lacquerware but also to breathe new life into the industry by catering to contemporary needs and preferences.
